Pebble Beach
Voted one of the top five restaurants in the UK by the Observer in 2006 this charming AA red rosette awarded dining destination is hard to beat! This achievement is partly down to the attentive and understanding management of owner/proprietor Mike Caddy and also down to the intuitive culinary skills of head chef Pierre Chevillard. Pierre – previously of the world-renowned Chewton Glen Hotel (where he held a Michelin star) carefully creates menus on a seasonal basis and thoughtful specials on a daily basis. The 125-cover restaurant (including the spectacular tables on the south facing terrace) invites its guests to indulge in a drink prior to dining in the classic bar area – or outside on the terrace and under the remarkable sail awning that protects guests from the midday sun!
You may be in need of such protection during the summer as it is hard to resist the draw of the breathtaking view, as you get ever closer to the cliff top to marvel at the Solent and the Isle of Wight. The menu, which changes four times a year, (and displayed on the web site) is always fresh and inspiring. For example the summer à la carte menu holds a catalogue of mouth-watering dishes including the classic and house special starter of double baked Emmental cheese soufflé or crayfish and French bean salad, the mains comprise obviously of a respectable seafood influence including; assiette ‘fruits de mer’ – a French style platter of crab, oysters, prawns and shellfish served with mayonnaise and shallot vinegar (can be ordered with half a lobster! – divine).
Gigas rock oysters or tuna fish char-grilled with stir-fry pak choi, shittake mushrooms, rice noodles, cabbage and sesame and sherry vinegar dressing. Meat lovers can also be assured of the same attention and are welcome to enjoy lamb shoulder braised with onion, chick peas, cumin, star anis, chilli and lemon zest with fresh mint couscous and 8oz prime fillet steak cooked to perfection! Diners can also enjoy a lighter options menu that works really well at lunchtime but is also available at dinner. Don’t be surprised when you are offered three menus during your dining experience especially when you receive the dessert menu – what a pleasure! Delight over sponge, butter and pistachio bruleé topped with ‘Cat and Fiddle’ strawberries and the warm chocolate brownie with crème Anglais and peanut ice cream.
Then the superb continental cheese selection if you can manage it along with a digestif of your choice and there are many on the list! To make a real night of it why not book into one of the air-conditioned bedrooms? What a treat!
