Shelley Park
When one considers the current regeneration of Boscombe, the timing of the Shelley Park redevelopment couldn’t be better!
Local development company, Charles Higgins Primary Care Ltd, and the local community, are responsible for the new-look Shelley Park, and it has prioritised the provision of top-class living environments, alongside the community’s requirements including the re-location of the Adeline Road Medical Centre with its eight GPs and the sympathetic treatment of the theatre; the original home of Percy Florence Shelley, son of Mary Shelley, the prominent literary figure – most remembered for her masterpiece ‘Frankenstein’.
Today Shelley Park is undergoing a major development and renovation. The £12-15 million works, which are scheduled to last 16 months, are well underway. The new-look site will be home to 14 well-appointed flats ranging in size between 900-1800sq.ft. and three penthouses with balconies. Other facilities for the new or second homeowners include electric gates to the secure car parking, direct access on to the 7.5 acre Shelley Park leading to the picturesque Boscombe cliff top and the proximity of three public tennis courts immediately in front of the landmark building. These apartments and penthouses have been billed as ‘spacious and impressive accommodation’ for the young professional, second homeowner or those wishing to downsize without compromising on space. The living proposition has proved to be very popular with a considerable number of enquiries already received by Charles Higgins! Further to this there is to be a charming restaurant integrated within the theatre. Plans are in place for this to have an Italian theme, (as the house was Shelley’s Italian home on the south coast), to welcome residents, locals and also to accommodate the patrons of the theatre for pre-show, interval and after-show refreshments. The theatre is a story in its own right!
Built in 1868, attached to the Manor House, the Theatre was built by Percy Shelley. Here many private and public productions were held before it was sold in 1890. With its future now secure, the Shelley Theatre will accommodate 220 seats in all. The venue is being described as a ‘Boutique Theatre’ and it is hoped that it will open in 2008 with the Dorset Corset Theatre Company’s production of Frankenstein! How appropriate!
Philip Proctor architect and construction director for Charles Higgins said: “We have worked so hard to make the living space appealing using a real eye for quality that delivers at all levels of living requirements yet retaining the charm of the site, along with contributing some real lifestyle assets
to the area.”
The Shelley Park site is currently undergoing landscaping up to the tennis courts and the building itself so that the gardens start to establish themselves well in time for the official opening of the new Boscombe landmark in 2008.
